Meet the Maker: GM Notebooks

We’re so excited to introduce one of our amazing members from our Welsh Makers Community in this Meet the Maker series. Meet Gwilym from GM Notebooks, a Cardiff University student, who founded GM Notebooks as a way of celebrating the Welsh language and make learning Welsh fun for all ages.

At Byw, we love sharing the stories behind the Welsh gifts and locally made products you’ll find on our siteBy shopping small and supporting Welsh makers like Gwil, you’re helping them keep doing what they love and we couldn’t be happier about it!

We caught up with Gwilym to hear all about his journey and what inspires him in both work and life.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your journey so far?
I’m a 20-year-old Welsh learner, and in 2023 I was incredibly proud to win Medal y Dysgwyr. Learning the language has shaped so much of who I am and what I want to create. After finishing my A-Levels, I realised I wanted to do something different from my hospitality job, something creative, meaningful, and connected to the Welsh language. That’s where my journey toward GM Notebooks began.

What sparked the idea for GM Notebooks and inspired you to start creating?
The idea grew from my own experience as a learner. I was always making my own revision sheets and finding little ways to make Welsh more accessible and fun. I noticed there weren’t many modern, stylish resources designed specifically for learners like me. So I started designing the things I wished I had and before long, people were asking for more. That’s when I realised this could become something bigger.

Which part of running the business brings you the most joy?
Definitely hearing from people who say the products help them on their own Welsh-learning journey. It feels very full-circle, I started by making resources for myself, and now they’re supporting others. I also love the creative process: planning new layouts, experimenting with designs, and watching an idea turn into something people can use every day. I also love meeting new people, and shopping from all the other small businesses I meet!

Do you have a favourite product you’ve made, or one with a special story behind it?
One of my favourites has to be our Welsh Grammar Mar. It was perfect for a grammar-freak (me!). I never expected anyone else to want it, but once I shared it, it quickly became one of the most popular products. It’s the design that convinced me I was on the right path.

When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your time?
When I’m not working, I’m usually studying. I’m currently doing a degree in Welsh and French, which keeps me busy in the best way. I also work part-time as a Welsh tutor, something I find really rewarding as it lets me support other learners. Outside of that, you’ll usually find me with a coffee in hand, exploring new places, or planning my next trip. I love travelling and finding little bits of inspiration wherever I go.

What exciting projects or products do you have planned for the future?
I’m always working on expanding my Welsh-language learning range even further, with new resources designed to support learners at different stages.  There’s lots to look forward to and I can’t wait to share what’s coming next.
