8 Welsh Phrases for Beginners
After a day soaking up the language, culture and creativity at the Eisteddfod yesterday, I felt inspired to share a few simple Welsh phrases that I found really helpful during my trip. Thanks again for the extra encouragement Doctor Cymraeg.
If you’re just starting out with the Welsh language, these phrases are a great way to feel a little braver using Welsh in real life, whether you’re visiting Wales, exploring local markets or shopping for handmade Welsh gifts and unique products made in Wales.
1. Shwmae / Su'mae / S'mai – Hello
A friendly and informal greeting you’ll hear all over Wales.
2. Sut mae pethau? – How are things?
A casual way to ask how someone is doing.
3. Gai…? – May I have…?
Perfect for asking politely in shops or cafés, especially when browsing Welsh products and locally made gifts.
4. Wyt ti eisiau…? – Do you want…?
A useful phrase when offering something or making suggestions, like sharing the perfect gift idea from Wales.
5. Esgusodwch fi, ble mae… – Excuse me, where is…
Handy for finding your way around towns, Welsh markets or cultural events.
6. Diolch yn fawr – Thanks a lot
A simple way to show your gratitude when buying Welsh gifts or supporting local makers.
7. Da iawn – Very good
Use this to give compliments or show approval for Welsh handmade products.

A great phrase to let people know you’re practising the language and often earns extra encouragement from local Welsh speakers in the community.
